    Remarks on Black Hole Instabilities and Closed String Tachyons.J. L. F. Barbón & E. Rabinovici - 2003 - Foundations of Physics 33 (1):145-165.
Physical arguments stemming from the theory of black-hole thermodynamics are used to put constraints on the dynamics of closed-string tachyon condensation in Scherk–Schwarz compactifications. A geometrical interpretation of the tachyon condensation involves an effective capping of a noncontractible cycle, thus removing the very topology that supports the tachyons. A semiclassical regime is identified in which the matching between the tachyon condensation and the black-hole instability flow is possible. We formulate a generalized correspondence principle and illustrate it in several different circumstances: (...)

This article presents the main features of the work of Domenico Vandelli (1735-1816), an Italian-born man of science who lived a large part of his life in Portugal. Vandelli's scientific interests as a naturalist paved the way to his activities as a reformer and adviser on economic and financial issues. The topics covered in his writings are similar to those discussed by Linnaeus, with whom Vandelli corresponded. They clearly reveal that the scientific preparation indispensable for a better knowledge of natural (...)

  12. Abstract Ideas and Universals.J. L. Mackie - 1976 - In Problems from Locke. Oxford [Eng.]: Clarendon Press.
In this chapter, Mackie presents a defence of Locke against Berkeley's attack on abstraction. It is argued that Locke's theory of ideas primarily concerns our ability to employ words and statements. Locke's theory concerning ideas of numbers is criticized. Three theories of universals are considered: realism, nominalism, and conceptualism; it is concluded, however, that the notion of there being distinct things with which we connect general words with particular things is mistaken. Mackie instead proposes a theory of general words being (...)

  14. Identity and Diversity.J. L. Mackie - 1976 - In Problems from Locke. Oxford [Eng.]: Clarendon Press.
Mackie sets out Locke's general theory of identity and raises some difficulties with the account. Hume's claim that the notion of identity is a fiction is critically assessed. Mackie argues that there is a relation between Locke's notion of identity and the notion that individuals can have essences. He presents an argument for what he calls Locke's thesis about the relativity of identity. The relevance of Kripke's discussion of identity and named individuals is examined. It is argued that Locke's thesis (...)

  15. Personal Identity.J. L. Mackie - 1976 - In Problems from Locke. Oxford [Eng.]: Clarendon Press.
Mackie attempts to revise Locke's theory of the identity of persons. Locke's equation of personal identity with the unity of consciousness is set out. Mackie examines various objections to Locke's theory and his use of puzzle cases is highlighted. Recent theories of personal identity, such as Parfit's, are critically discussed. Mackie suggests that the equation of personal identity with the continuity of neurophysiological structure would resolve some of the difficulties associated with an account of personal identity.

  16. Representative Theories of Perception.J. L. Mackie - 1976 - In Problems from Locke. Oxford [Eng.]: Clarendon Press.
Mackie outlines Locke's representationalist theory. He analyses the relation between representationalism and the picture theory of ideas. The theory's relation to the veil of perception doctrine is also critically examined. Mackie criticizes the verificationist theory of meaning and instead argues that ideas should be understood as intentional objects. Mackie introduces and defends a version of realism, which he calls ‘common‐sense realism’.

    Studies on Semantics in Generative Grammar. [REVIEW]L. J. - 1974 - Review of Metaphysics 27 (3):605-606.
Three long papers are collected here which constitute Chomsky’s major theoretical work on syntax and semantics subsequent to the "standard theory" of Aspects of the Theory of Syntax. Since 1965, transformational-generative linguists have suggested various changes in "standard theory," centering on the relationship between the syntactic and semantic components in natural language grammars. In these papers Chomsky explains several specific problems that require the extension of standard theory and he criticizes the proposals and arguments of the generative semanticists, attempting to (...)

    Semantic Theory. [REVIEW]L. J. - 1973 - Review of Metaphysics 27 (2):394-395.
In this book, Katz details, extends, sharpens, and, in comparatively minor ways, amends the notion of semantic theory that he has maintained through the last decade. Philosophers will be interested in the views that Katz derives about logic, analyticity, opacity, natural language, and intensionality; and the main focus is on these topics throughout the book, though considerable attention is given the technical apparatus of semantic markers, projection rules, and so on. The work concludes with a chapter that criticizes the equation (...)

This attractive book introduces the central issues of semantics through a judicious mixture of the exposition of views and an attempt to argue for some of these views. Kempson has a reasonable grasp of what philosophers and linguists have to say about these issues, and some insight into the misunderstandings that occur between philosophers and linguists when they discuss these issues. Each of the eleven chapters ends with an annotated bibliography. This book would be a good backbone for a course (...)

The first four chapters of this book first appeared, separately and within the last couple of years, as invited contributions to collections; the fifth and sixth chapters, which are probably the best and certainly the only sharply focused ones, appeared in journals ; the last two chapters have not previously appeared. Examining the Mr Tsafendas enquiry trial: Current insights on forensic psychiatric assessment and ethics.J. L. Roos & C. Kotze - forthcoming - South African Journal of Bioethics and Law:e1600.
On 6 September 1966, the prime minister of South Africa, Dr HF Verwoerd was killed by Mr Tsafendas, a Portuguese national of Greek descent, in parliament by stabbing him in the chest. Mr Tsafendas was a messenger in parliament. At the enquiry trial of Mr Tsafendas, he was found unfit to stand trial on the ground that he suffered from schizophrenia. The psychiatric evidence during the enquiry trial was reviewed and discussed under the following headings: Diagnosis of schizophrenia; Consideration of (...)

    Response to Tucker on hiddenness: J. L. SCHELLENBERG.J. L. Schellenberg - 2008 - Religious Studies 44 (3):289-293.
Chris Tucker's paper on the hiddenness argument seeks to turn aside a way of defending the latter which he calls the value argument. But the value argument can withstand Tucker's criticisms. In any case, an alternative argument capable of doing the same job is suggested by his own emphasis on free will.

    Causation, Creaturely and Divine.Angus J. L. Menuge - 2023 - Philosophia Christi 25 (2):221-229.
A biblical approach to reconciling God’s sovereignty with creaturely responsibility should avoid the extremes of global occasionalism and completely autonomous creatures. This paper evaluates the standard intermediary solutions offered by conservationists and concurrentists. It argues that while each contributes insights which a satisfactory account should retain, none is fully adequate. Even Leibniz’s sophisticated response, which accounts for providence, miracles, and moral responsibility, unacceptably abridges creaturely power to implement decisions. My alternative proposal seeks to explain how creatures can retain full responsibility (...)

    How to be an atheist and a sceptic too: response to McCreary: J. L. SCHELLENBERG.J. L. Schellenberg - 2010 - Religious Studies 46 (2):227-232.
Mark McCreary has argued that I cannot consistently advance both the hiddenness argument and certain arguments for religious scepticism found in my book The Wisdom to Doubt . This reaction was expected, and in WD I explained its shortsightedness in that context. First, I noted how in Part III of WD , where theism is addressed, my principal aim is not to prove atheism but to show theists that they are not immune from the scepticism defended in Parts I and (...)

This study empirically examines the association between certain director characteristics and the extent of voluntary audit committee disclosure in annual reports. Results suggest that Singapore's publicly traded firms are more likely to voluntarily disclose audit committee related information as: the number of board members increases; different individuals occupy the roles of CEO and board chairperson; and the proportion of independent directors serving on the board increases. Findings, however, fail to show any association between the amount of voluntary audit committee disclosure (...)

    1. Causal knowledge is an indispensable element in science. Causal assertions are embedded in both the results and the procedures of scientific investigation. 2. It is therefore worthwhile to investigate the meaning of causal statements and the ways in which we can arrive at causal knowledge.
